Pop-up Playground Library
A wonderful pop-up library appeared on the playground on Monday.
Elmstead Wood is one of six lucky schools selected to take part in the London Children’s Book Project's scheme encouraging reading across London. The little bright green hut appeared on the playground on Monday 10th September, packed with a wonderful selection of books for children to choose from to read at play times and take home. The hut will be on the playground this half term, until Friday 19th October and books will regularly be replenished.
We want to promote a love of reading in children, because those who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in school than those who do not, but also develop a broader vocabulary and an increased general knowledge. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.
"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." Joseph Addison
We would like to invite parents to contribute pre-loved books or perhaps ones their children have grown out of to the collection.
